Thinking that Nigeria and journalism would not produce the wealth I deliberately wanted, I decided to stay back in the United States of America during a US-sponsored trip. I had concluded plans to sell everything I had in Nigeria after which I would make an arrangement for my wife to join me. Everything was well-planned. My uncle eventually, got me a job in a supermarket. After about six weeks in the place, I began to see the foolishness of allowing money to govern my career decisions. I saw many Nigerians living in the US doing work they were not proud of and married to wives they could not show to friends. They were not living any fulfilling lives. I meditated on the scenes and eventually, I decided to return to the country without wasting more time.

I have since achieved a good measure of fulfilment since I returned to God’s original plan for me which is to use my gift of writing and the platform of journalism to spread the good news to as many people as possible. And the blessings of the Lord have continued to follow from such obedience. There should be no point of no return when you discover you are in the wrong. Be bold to stop and retrace your steps. We often think that we have gone too far. Someone once said that if you travel in a car at 1000 kilometres per hour in a wrong direction, you still would not get to the correct destination. The wisest thing to do is to put a stop to your journey and retrace your steps. You can still make tremendous progress when you are on the right track.

STEP OF FAITH: Do you sense that you are in a wrong career path? Take time to reflect and retrace your steps. Embrace what you are wired to do. God can still do amazing things with the rest of your life.

PRAYER OF FAITH:  Dear Lord, bring me back to the path you have created for me from the foundation of the earth.

The key is to understand the reason God blesses. God blesses so that you can be a channel of distribution to others. God wants his kingdom expanded, so when he blesses you, it is not for your consumption. You are expected to honour God with your possessions above all else. You are expected to be fascinated in sponsoring the work of God and partnering with other Christians to win more souls into his kingdom.
When the fear of God is what drives you, you would add integrity to the pursuit of wealth. A young man sometime ago used the yardstick of the flashy lifestyles of his friends to measure success. He was desperate to catch up with them and impress friends. He wanted to be rich by all means. He eventually, got involved in financial crime and was jailed for 14 years having been found guilty. But he met Christ while in prison in an interesting way and he was subsequently released.

With his encounter with the Lord, he decided along with his wife to start an akara (bean cake) frying business and God is blessing them beyond what they imagined. Wealth alone can not bring fulfilment. What brings fulfilment is to do the work of God. When this is in place, he would even bless you in your sleep. The reason many of us want to do it on our own is because we can’t really be sure that God can take care of all our needs when we focus single-handedly on Him. We sometimes want to help God in a few areas while we label some areas as God’s zones. All zones in your life belong to Jehovah Jireh. When you yield to Him completely there is nothing else to worry about. He would also defend His name as Jehovah Jireh (The Great Provider).
STEP OF FAITH: Resolve to always check your motive for pursuing wealth. Any time you sense obsession for money, you should be on your knees and ask God to deliver you.

PRAYER OF FAITH: O Lord, give me the power to take a firm decision against serving mammon for I have resolved to dedicate the rest of my life to serving you

Work makes it possible for God to reveal other gifts in us. When you work hard by stretching yourself to do what you ordinarily thought was difficult, you would ultimately discover that the more you do that work the more God would release the anointing to you to do it smarter. Hard work is a springboard for it can position a person from a lowly background to dominate the scene.

When I picked a job with a media house in 1989 as a proof-reader, there were so many odds stacked against me, but I made up my mind not to complain to anybody. Rather, I asked for extra work from my boss; I switched to a permanent night shift to enable me to attend a full-time postgraduate programme and a Master’s degree during the day time. Overtime, I started to write articles for that paper. I was just keen on developing my work ethics. Interestingly, I excelled in all the areas. I got the Director’s price for overall best student where I studied for my Postgraduate Diploma in Journalism.

At a point the editor of the paper started to pay for every article I wrote. That was in addition to my salary as a proof-reader. In the process of time, I was able to move out of the proofreading unit into mainstream journalism from where all manner of opportunities started to flow my way. I have been to many countries of the world. Years later when I eventually joined others to set up a financial newspaper, one of my bosses back in 1989 eventually joined the newspaper still with the same position he held when we were together in 1989!
I make bold to say that without a lifetime commitment to work, your purpose may not be fully realised. God does not usually show us everything he has for us at once. He reveals them in stages. Once you are found faithful in what you are doing at the moment, he would introduce to you a new opportunity to step up. Hard work pays.

STEP OF FAITH: Make a commitment now that you would never see yourself as working for people but working for God. Decide to give your present assignment the best shot even if you are not appreciated. In the process of time, God himself would shower you with rewards. This is guaranteed.

I trust that you have kick-started this year on a sound note already. Well, I have and this is a tip of what I promised you.
You and I both know how this year started with the endless drama of subsidy or no subsidy. And then there was the series of “Occupying” messages flying here and there with the authorities playing hide and seek with its citizenry. Have you forgotten in a hurry? In my last message, I mentioned the need to live life particularly this year 2012 based on vision than as a reaction. Interestingly, many of my protégés and people that I know have keyed into this and are presently swimming against the tides and recording tremendous results already.

At whatever point you may be right now, every help you need is at your disposal if only you recognize and unleash it.

• Do you plan starting that business, landing that dream job or maybe you have lost it completely?

The good news is that it should give birth to a new generation of leaders who would be conscious of posterity and become accountable to God and the people they are leading. I am glad to be part of this because we shall soon witness responsible and vibrant leaders who will chart a new course of development in our nation’s history. As we sheath our swords for further dialogue and move for series of policy changes now, it is my opinion that we also live our lives based on vision and personal convictions than as a reaction.
